Wuhan's local cuisine, known as Hubei, is one of the 10 famous dish series in China. Combining its agricultural resources with the products of a major inland fishery and enjoying an advantageous geographical position as a thoroughfare to nine provinces, Wuhan is a true melting pot, and its cuisine reflects the best of many regions.

Besides such restaurants as Dazhonghua, Laohuibin, and Laotongcheng, which serve Hubei food primarily, other prestigious restaurants include Dehua Restaurant (Beijing-Tianjin food), Qiwanshun Restaurant (Beijing-Suzhou food), and Wufangzhai (Jiangsu-Zhejiang food).

Wuhan steamed dumplings are distinctive of the region, steamed wild goose is another local treat, and the Wuchang fish is so good that even Chairman Mao Zedong wrote a poem about it!
