Food
While Chinese cuisine ranks as one of the best
in the world, Shanghai cuisine ranks high in China. (Shanghai also leads
the country in the catering business.) Highly expert chefs preside over
the kitchens of Shanghai's famous restaurants, offering wonderful presentations
of one or more of the eight celebrated styles of Chinese food: Beijing,
Guangdong , Sichuan (Szechuan), Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Hunan, Anhui, and Fujian.
Of course, each style consists of several local dishes. For example, Zhejiang
cuisine includes Hangzhou, Ningbo, and Shaoxing dishes, while Jiangsu
cuisine includes Yangzhou, Suzhou, Wuxi, and Shanghai dishes. Also in
Shanghai, there are a number of Western-style restaurants as well as vegetarian
restaurants serving dishes cooked with vegetables and bean products only.
These restaurants are what makes Shanghai cuisine so celebrated both at
home and abroad.
