This bridge was the first one designed and built by the Chinese people and used as the example of self-reliance for the Chinese. It flies 6,772 meters across the Yangtze River between Xiaguan and Pukou. It is a combined bridge with a double-track railway and a highway. The grand bridge is supported by 9 biers. On each head of the bridge there are a pair of bridge towers 70 meters high. The construction started began in 1961and finished was completed in 1968.
