There is a great deal of disagreement among scholars as to just exactly what chuan chu is. According to one school of thought, it refers to characters whose pronunciation has changed over time, and a new character is created to better reflect the new pronunciation. For example, the character kai was created in response to the emergence of a new pronunciation of its original character qi.
